I have a preemie baby who broke out using the traditional gentle baby products (johnson & johnson's, huggies natural, vaseline, baby oil, dove, etc). Burt's Bee Baby Bee Products are the only bath and lotion products he can use use without break outs. I use the tear free shampoo and wash (96.08 percent natural) for hair and body and the buttermilk lotion (98.81 percent natural) for dry areas. To keep cradle cap at bay as well as for other skin irritations I use California Baby calendula cream. It is a miracle in a bottle! You'll find these products in your local organic health food store.
References :
We have a pediatrician and a dermatologist in the family. Both agree: Dove unscented soap for baths, Eucerin unscented lotions after the bath, Huggies UNSCENTED natural care baby wipes, fewer rashes from pampers than any other diaper. Basically you need to avoid perfume and dye in everything including laundry detergent (Tide Free) and liquid fabric softener (Downy unscented).

Best of luck to you with your new baby!
References :
M.D.'s in family, mommy of 3

Use natural products such as olive oil. Vaseline is also pretty safe although there is some concern it may be contaminated. True talcum powder -which is rarely used anymore is also a risk as it can be contaminated with asbestos.

Lanolin is considered to be safe, particularly organic. Shea butter is also good but I am not aware of whether or not it is a potential allergen (mind you what isn't). Aloe can also be used. If you grow your own aloe you know it is safe.

As for commercial wipes, there isn't much. I believe pampers makes one with just water but the paper is still bleached.
References :
Burt's Bees is an all-natural brand or beauty products. They make a line of baby skin products called "Baby Bee." It is a little more expensive than Johnson's but is natural and easy to get your hands on. You can find it in the Infant's section of Target. The products also smell really good and fresh!
